CBC Undergraduate Melanie Perez for Hispanic Heritage Student Spotlight

"Hello! My name is Melanie Perez, and I am a student assistant in both the CBC Advising Office and the Teaching Services Office.  I am a sophomore majoring in Journalism and minoring in Sports Management. With this, I plan to pursue a career in sports journalism or broadcasting. My second year of college has already taught me so much in different ways that I will forever be grateful for. I was born and raised here in Tucson, Arizona. My mom is from Cananea, Sonora, so growing up, I spent most of my weekends visiting my mom’s hometown, surrounded by my family and the culture. Living in Tucson and going to Cananea, I spoke both English and Spanish. Today, listening to Mexican music has kept me connected to my culture and helped me improve my Spanish-speaking skills. Being Latina means carrying generations of strength and love throughout my life now. “At the end of the day, we can endure much more than we think we can.” - Frida Kahlo"
