Black historian and Harvard graduate Dr. Carter G. Woodson believed that truth could not be denied and that reason would prevail over prejudice. He founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History to raise awareness of the contributions African Americans had made and were making to the advancement of civilization.

From this Association, Negro History Week was conceived and first celebrated in February 1926. Negro History Week became a central part of African American life and significant progress had been made in spreading awareness. The celebration expanded to the entire month of February upon President Ford's message to "seize the opportunity to honor the too often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavors throughout our history."
