Hi my name is Eric Primack and this summer I had the opportunity to conduct revolutionary biochemical research at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. In the Sherman Lab I was working with multiple different types of enzymes in the goal of creating and diversifying natural products. Specifically I worked with a prenyltransferase, NotF, and two flavin-dependent monooxygenases, BvnB and PhqK. All of these enzymes are derived from various marine fungi and have a broad enough substrate scope allowing us to utilize non-native substrates. While conducting research I also had the chance to participate in Center for Chemical Innovation seminars that had topics ranging from graduate student research to self-help and stress coping mechanisms. At the end of my 10 week stay the members of the Chemistry Summer Undergraduate Research Program and I each presented our summer research to professors and researchers apart of the Center for Selective C-H Functionalization. Currently I am a rising Junior in the Honors College here at the University of Arizona majoring in Biochemistry and minoring in Mathematics. I hope to continue my education by attending medical school where I aspire to specialize in neuroscience.
